The Clubhouse is the Behavioral Intervention Association's (http://www.bia4autism.org) after-school program. Once a week, children between the ages of 5 and 12, who have communication and social challenges, meet and engage in fun activities to practice different social skills. Thanks to the generosity of our friends at the Jewish Community High School of The Bay who have given us access to their beautiful campus and their committed student volunteers, we were able to bring our East Bay Clubhouse program to San Francisco.

Games Galore: Hiss

Art Project 'Thank You' Poster: We decorated a poster board with different collage materials (stickers, paper scraps, glitter glue, etc.). We also glued on pictures showing us having fun at Clubhouse. With the poster, we wanted to say thank you to our friends at JCHS. Without JCHS, we would not be able to run our San Francisco Clubhouse program.

Red Light/Green Light: We took turns holding the signs and being the traffic light and practiced paying close attention to the signs. The green sign meant that we had to run as fast as we could to get to the other side. When the red sign was up, we had to stop.

Turn-taking game “Hiss”: Students were divided into two teams and engaged in the game of “Hiss.”  "Hiss" is a great game for all ages and skill levels. The players match colors and make snakes from heads to tails. It can be played as a cooperative game, i.e., all players work together to get as many completed snakes as possible or each player plays against the others. We focused on cooperation today and we all worked together to finish long and short snakes and put them into our snake pit. Slither....

Games Galore: Zingo

  • Art Project "Board Game": We continued to work on our board game:
    1. We decorated the game board and the landing spots.
    2. We glued the landing spots onto the board alternating the different colors.
    3. We decorated the activity cards.
We can't wait to play the game at one of our next sessions.

    • Turn-taking Game “Zingo”: Students were divided into small groups and engaged in the turn-taking game “Zingo":  A plastic dispenser deals out two plastic tiles per turn, the first player to see a match between the picture on the tile and on their cards gets to claim the tile. This is a great board game that focuses on vocabulary, matching, social interaction, attention and focus. And it is fun!

    It's a match!
    • Musical Chairs with Hula Hoops: We revisited this popular game from the winter Clubhouse session. Hula hoops were spread out in the room. When the music played the students danced around the hula  hoops. When the music stopped, the students found a hula hoop to stand in. With each stoppage of the music, one of the hula hoops was removed. Everyone did a fantastic job dancing together and sharing the hula hoops.

    Games Galore: Hula Hoop Toss

    • Obstacle Course: Students partnered up to go through an obstacle course. They carried a small cup with rock salt and filled a tube with the salt that we later turned into a musical instrument. Everyone was very careful not to spill the rock salt. Our favorite stomp rockets were placed at the end of the obstacle course.
    •  “Plexiglass Painting”:  Students painted a plexiglass with brushes. When the plexi was covered with paint, we placed a piece of paper on top of the plexi to make an imprint. We will create our own board game at one of our next meetings and will use the imprint as our game board.
    • Hula hoop Toss: 3 hula hoops were placed on the floor with a number inside each hoop. The students tossed bean bags into the hoops and earned points as a group when they hit the target. We practiced giving 'high 5s' to our friends during this activity.

    Welcome Back! Games Galore!

Welcome to our San Francisco spring Clubhouse session. We were very excited to greet our old and new Clubhouse friends as well as seeing Dilara and Sophie, our JHCS student volunteers, again. Danyal, who is also a high school student at JCHS, is joining us this session. We are very grateful that Danyal, Dilara and Sophie are part of our Clubhouse team. They are funny, love playing games with us and very patient.

Today, it was all about getting to know our new friends and to have a good time. We played some of our favorite Clubhouse games such as bowling and with the parachute. We also created new Clubhouse placemats by attaching different collage materials to contact paper.
