The Clubhouse is the Behavioral Intervention Association's (http://www.bia4autism.org) after-school program. Once a week, children between the ages of 5 and 12, who have communication and social challenges, meet and engage in fun activities to practice different social skills. Thanks to the generosity of our friends at the Jewish Community High School of The Bay who have given us access to their beautiful campus and their committed student volunteers, we were able to bring our East Bay Clubhouse program to San Francisco.

A Rainbow of Colors: Rainbow Tie Dye Baby Wipes

Today was our last Clubhouse winter session. It was really sad to say goodbye to our friends. We played our favorite games one more time and had a little party. Our top 2 favorite games of the winter Clubhouse were "Rainbow Bowling" and "Rainbow Obstacle Course," closely followed by the "Rainbow Parachute Play". We also loved doing art together. Today, we did another fun art project:
“Rainbow Tie Dye Baby Wipes”: Rubber bands were tied around different sections of a baby wipe. We colored the baby wipes with watercolors. When the rubber bands were removed, beautiful patterns appeared.

Here is our Clubhouse Chant that we have been singing at the end of each session. It was fun to partner up with a friend one more time and to follow the different movements to our chant:
"Our hands say goodbye with a clap, clap, clap. Our feet say goodbye with a tap, tap, tap. Clap, clap. clap. Tap, tap, tap. We will see you at Clubhouse next time.

We will see you at Clubhouse next time!!!

At the end, everyone received a fantastic prize out of  the prize box.

A Rainbow of Colors: Rainbow Sparkle Bottle

Small Group Art Project “Rainbow Sparkle Bottle”: Students created a rainbow of swirling colors by filling small plastic bottles with light corn syrup, water and glitter. The students were encouraged to help each other to complete this project.

    1. How to create a Magic Sparkle Bottle:
    2. Fill bottle about 3/4 (or less) full with corn syrup (light corn syrup works best).
    3. Add glitter.
    4. Fill the rest of the bottle with cold water.
    5. Tape the bottle cap.
Show & Tell: Students shared their “rainbow sparkle bottles” with the group.

        Rainbow Bozo Bucket Toss:
The students tossed bean bags (rainbow colors) into the buckets. If they were successful and hit the target, they drew a question/statement out of the bucket (e.g., “Give your friends a high 5.”/”How old is your friend?”).  The game continued until all questioned were answered.

A Rainbow of Colors: Rainbow Popsicle Stick Paintings

Today, we focused on cooperation, sharing materials and following directions.
          • Warm-up Game “Rainbow Musical Chairs with Hula-Hoops”:  Hula hoops (rainbow colors) were spread out in the room. When the music played the children danced around the hula hoops. When the music stopped, the students found a hula hoop to stand in. With each stoppage of the music, one of the hula hoops was removed and the students were encouraged to share the hula hoops.

          • Small Group Art Project “Rainbow Popsicle Stick Paintings”: The students put paint (rainbow colors) with a spoon and Q-tips on a big piece of paper. Then, they covered the piece of paper with wax paper and spread the paint with a popsicle stick. We observed the interesting color patterns that appeared and tried to mix colors.

          • Adapted Red Light/Green Light "Fly to the Rainbow": The goal was to reach the rainbow. Signs showed us what movements we were supposed to follow (e.g., jumping, flying). We did very well following directions.
